Writer, Producer, Teacher
Lon Appleby is an award-winning documentary producer, journalist, and general education professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at Durham College in Oshawa, Canada. Along with launching The Global Class, he teaches classes in literature, cultural studies, and world history. His work has taken him across the world, and he has combined his experiences and travels, along with his interest in the importance of collective learning, into a forward-looking "glocal" vision for today's college and university students.
We live in an ever converging world in which a broader understanding of the world means precisely that: the world as a whole. To thrive in these complex times requires a worldview built on an understanding of shared problems and diverse cultures. With his students at Canada's Durham College, Lon Appleby has created a new educational model for the challenges of a world that has become a planet. Groups from three different parts of the world meet online in a live face-to-face forum with a provocative guest from a fourth part. 'Exchange and create' is the guiding philosophy. Participants in a global class share their diverse perspectives and have the opportunity to interact with an accomplished 'citizen of the world'. An open-platform website has been built where classes are livestreamed and archived, and users can tweet in, blog, share resources, and post assignments. A global class provides people everywhere with the opportunity to engage in real time, face to face discussions and address shared issues, ideas, and stories from their distinct local perspectives, outside of political or corporate influence, at a time when the world shows no signs of slowing in its continuing interdependence.
"The Global Class is for all students of the world. Humanity thrives on collective learning. It's what gives us power and compassion." - Lon Appleby
