Christian arrived in Montreal, Canada, in 1995 as a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2006 as an officer and completed his training at Royal Military College Saint-Jean in Quebec.
Upon entering the army, he realized his ability to speak only French prevented him from forming a united front with his fellow soldiers. Christian took significant efforts to engage and establish a community with his fellow soldiers.
After 11 years of living in Canada, Christian felt that he was still not integrated into Canadian society and decided to move his family to Oshawa.
In Oshawa, he began learning English informally through his surrounding and then decided to formally learn English at the English Language Learning Centre (ELC) at Durham College and University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Christian has successfully completed his studies at the ELC and is now pursuing a Master’s Degree in Criminology.
In 2015, he was recognized for his community engagement efforts and was awarded the Mandela Legacy Award, which is intended to celebrate the work of inspiring leaders, athletes, entertainers and social justice activists.
