Christian arrived in Montreal in 1995 as a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He joined the army in 2006 as an officer and completed his training at Royal Military College Saint-Jean in Quebec.
Upon entering the army, he realized his ability to only speak French prevented him from forming a united front with his fellow soldiers. Christian took significant efforts to engage and establish a community with his fellow soldiers.
After 11 years of living in Canada, Christian still felt as if he was still not integrated into the Canadian society and decided to move his family to Oshawa.
In Oshawa, he began learning English informally through his surrounding and then decided to formally learn English at the ELC at UOIT. Christian has successfully graduated the ELC and will move on to pursue a Master’s Degree in Criminology at UOIT.
In 2015, Christian was recognized for his community engagement efforts and was awarded the Mandela Legacy Award, which is intended to celebrate the work of inspiring leaders, athletes, entertainers and social justice activists.
